ANTS

CENTIPEDES

Damages & Risks of Centipedes:

  • Mostly a nuisance and a "creep factor" pest - their main impact is startling people; they don't damage your home.

  • Rare, minor bites - larger centipedes can bite if handled, causing brief pain and mild swelling similar to a bee sting, but bites are uncommon and not dangerous to most people.

  • They signal an underlying problem - their real significance is what they point to: excess moisture and a population of other insects they're feeding on.

  • They don't cause structural damage - no chewing of wood, wiring, or insulation.

  • They don't spread disease, contaminate food, or reproduce in large indoor swarms like some pests - you typically see them one at a time.

  • The centipede itself - flattened, yellowish gray to brown body, with many long legs (the common house centipedede has 15 pairs) and long antennae; house centipedes have distinctly long, banded legs and move fast.

  • Fast, darting movement - they scurry quickly across floors and walls, often at night, and dart for cover when a light comes on.

  • Damp, dark areas - bathrooms, basements, crawlspaces, laundry rooms, under sinks, and floor drains.

  • Sightings near other bugs - because they hunt other insects, seeing them often means there's a food supply (and usually a moisture issue) already present.

  • Entry along the ground - around foundation cracks, door thresholds, and utility line gaps, especially after weather changes.

What to Look For:

  • Killing the ones you see ignores the cause - centipedes are a symptom; if you don't fix the moisture and the insects they eat, more keep coming.

What to Look For:

  • Large numbers of slow, sluggish flies on sunny exterior walls in fall, usually south and west facing

  • Clusters of flies at windows, in attics, or around light fixtures on warm days in winter or early spring

  • Flies that are noticeably bigger and slower than house flies, dark gray with a faint golden sheen

  • Small dark spots on walls or window frames where they've gathered

  • A faint, sweetish odor in severe attic infestations

Why DIY doesn't Work:

  • The flies you see aren't the problem. By the time they're at the window, hundreds more are tucked inside wall voids and attic spaces you can't reach.

  • Swatting and sprays don't stop the source. Killing the visible flies does nothing about the overwintering mass behind the walls, so they keep filtering back in.

  • Store-bought foggers miss the harborage. The flies hide deep in voids and insulation where consumer products don't penetrate.

COCKROACHES

  • German cockroach - the most common and most stubborn indoor roach. Small and tan with two dark stripes behind the head, it packs into warm, damp kitchens and bathrooms, breeds fast, and can spread germs across food surfaces - making it the hardest roach to control once it takes hold.

  • Oriental cockroach - frequently called the "water bug." Large, shiny, and dark, it favors cool, damp spaces like basements, drains, and crawlspaces, often working its way in from outside. Slow moving and musty smelling, it's a sign of excess moisture and a pest that thrives around decay.

  • American cockroach - the big reddish-brown roach people call a "water bug." American cockroaches favor warm, damp areas like basements, drains, and boiler rooms, and often signal a moisture problem. They spread bacteria as they travel, so treating the source and entry points matters more than surface spraying.

  • Brown-banded cockroach - the odd one out. Small and brown with two light bands across the back, it prefers warm, dry areas and spreads through the whole house instead of staying near water, turning up in unexpected spots like upper walls, closets, bedrooms, and even electronics.

Damages & Risks of Cockroaches:

  • Disease and contamination. Roaches travel through drains, garbage, and sewers, then across counters, dishes, and prep surfaces, spreading bacteria like salmonella and E. coli wherever they go.

  • Allergies and asthma. Their droppings, shed skins, and saliva are a leading indoor allergen and a common asthma trigger, a real concern for children, staff, and customers alike.

  • Failed inspections and reputation. For any business, live roaches are one of the fastest ways to fail a health inspection, and a single sighting by a customer can end up in a review that costs far more than the pests ever would.

  • They multiply fast and hide. German cockroaches breed explosively, producing hundreds of offspring a year, and nest deep in wall voids, behind appliances, and inside equipment, so what you see is a fraction of what's really there.

EARWIGS/PINCER BUGS

  • Mostly a nuisance and "creep factor" pest - the pincers look threatening, but earwigs are largely harmless to people.

  • They don't spread disease or infest food in the way roaches or rodents do.

  • Rare, minor pinch - they can pinch if handled, but it seldom breaks the skin and isn't dangerous or venomous; they do not crawl into ears despite the old myth.

  • No structural damage - they don't chew wood, wiring, or insulation.

  • Minor garden damage - in larger numbers they can chew leaves, flowers, and seedlings, which is a bigger concern for gardeners than for the home itself.

  • The real issue is numbers and moisture - when conditions are right they show up in large groups, and their presence usually signals excess dampness.

  • The reassuring part: earwigs don't burrow into ears, aren't venomous, don't damage your home's structure, and don't spread disease. They're startling to find, but the problem is nuisance and moisture - both very manageable.

  • Slow movement in damp spots - you'll find them creeping slowly, or dead, in basements, crawlspaces, garages, and on ground level floors.

  • Outdoor gathering near the foundation - under mulch, leaf litter, stones, logs, flowerpots, and damp soil, where they feed on decaying plant matter.

SPIDERS

  • Common house spiders & cellar spiders - the everyday culprits behind webs in corners, basements, garages, and window frames. Harmless, but their webbing and egg sacs are a persistent nuisance.

     

  • Wolf spiders - large, fast, and alarming to find, since they hunt on the ground instead of building webs. They look far scarier than they are; a bite is possible but rare and no worse than a bee sting.

     

  • Yellow sac spiders - small, pale, and responsible for many of the minor spider bites people actually get indoors. The bite can sting and redden but is generally minor.

     

  • Black widow - present in Pennsylvania but uncommon, favoring undisturbed spots like woodpiles, sheds, crawlspaces, and garages. Its bite is medically significant and warrants a doctor, though bites are rare and the spider is not aggressive.

     

  • Here's the reassuring truth first: the vast majority of spiders in Lancaster County are harmless, and most are actually beneficial - they eat other pests. The concern is usually more about the nuisance of webs and the occasional bite than any real danger. The ones worth knowing:

What to Look For:

  • Webs in corners and quiet spots. The clearest sign - cobwebs in ceiling and wall corners, basements, garages, window frames, eaves, and around light fixtures. Different spiders build different webs: tidy geometric orb webs, messy tangled cobwebs, or funnel shaped webs in corners.

  • Egg sacs. Small round or teardrop silk balls tucked into webs and sheltered crevices. Each can hold dozens to hundreds of eggs, so finding them signals the population is set to grow.

  • The spiders themselves, especially in low traffic areas - basements, garages, storage rooms, closets, and behind furniture and stored boxes.

  • Shed skins and prey debris. Cast off skins and the drained husks of insects collected in or below webs point to an active, established spider.

  • An uptick in other bugs. Since spiders follow their food, a lot of spiders usually means a lot of other insects - so a spider surge is often a sign of a broader pest problem worth addressing at the source.

  • Where they concentrate. Undisturbed, sheltered spots are the hot zones - crawlspaces, under decks, around foundation edges, and anywhere clutter gives them cover.

Why DIY Doesn't Work:

  • Sprays mostly miss them. Spiders' long legs hold their bodies up off treated surfaces, so they pick up far less than crawling insects - which is why store-bought sprays disappoint.

  • Egg sacs survive. Clearing visible webs doesn't touch the egg sacs hidden in crevices, and each can hatch dozens more.

  • The food source stays. Spiders come for other insects - unless you address what's drawing them in, new ones keep replacing the ones you remove.
